Solar String Cold Voc

Enter module Voc, string length and the lowest ambient temperature to check the cold string voltage against the inverter limit.

Vmax = N × Voc × (1 + βVoc/100 × (Tmin − 25))  •  Nmax = ⌊Vlimit / Voc,cold⌋

Step-by-step

  1. Enter valid values to begin.

Use the lowest expected ambient temperature for the site, for example the ASHRAE extreme minimum or the 2% design temperature, not an average winter night. The table method uses the correction factors for the lowest ambient range as typed from memory (25 to 20 °C 1.02 down to −36 to −40 °C 1.20); verify them against the adopted NEC edition. The hot Vmp check uses a linear coefficient (typically −0.30 to −0.40 %/°C) at the hot cell temperature you enter; set the MPPT minimum to 0 to skip it. Margin is below the limit, and under 3% is flagged as marginal (a project rule of thumb, not a code value). Always read the datasheets and confirm the adopted NEC edition and local AHJ requirements.

Solar String Cold Voc: Sizing to the Coldest Morning

Core Engineering Principles

A silicon cell is a diode, and a diode’s forward voltage climbs as it cools. Panel makers print Voc at 25 °C cell temperature, but on a clear January sunrise the cells sit at the ambient low and the string is open-circuit before the inverter wakes up and loads it. Modules gain roughly 0.25–0.30% of Voc per degree below 25 °C, so 40 degrees colder adds about 11%. Across eighteen modules, 891 V on paper becomes 991 V on the meter, and input stages fail on the first frost when someone sizes to STC.

The other end of the day matters too. At 70 °C cell temperature Vmp falls roughly a third of a percent per degree, and the string must still clear the MPPT minimum or the inverter stops harvesting on the hottest afternoons. So we size between two walls: cold Voc under the equipment limit with margin, hot Vmp above the tracking window. Use the lowest temperature you can defend for the site (ASHRAE extreme minimum or 2% design value), never the average winter night.

Voc,cold = Voc × (1 + βVoc/100 × (Tmin − 25))
Vmax = N × Voc,cold  •  Table method: Vmax = N × Voc × CF
Nmax = ⌊ Vlimit / Voc,cold ⌋  •  Vmp,hot = Vmp × (1 + βVmp/100 × (Thot − 25))
Nmin = ⌈ VMPPT,min / Vmp,hot ⌉

NEC & Standard References

NEC 690.7 requires the maximum PV system voltage to be calculated from the sum of module Voc corrected for the lowest expected ambient temperature. 690.7(A)(1) uses the manufacturer’s voltage temperature coefficient when it is supplied, and the correction factor table in 690.7 applies when it is not. Verify the table values in this tool against the adopted NEC edition. Dwelling PV circuits are limited to 600 V. IEC 62548 gives PV array design requirements, including voltage calculation, and UL 1741 covers inverter listings and rated input voltages. Confirm AHJ requirements.
Worked Example: 18-Module String on a 1000 V Inverter
Given: module Voc 49.5 V, Vmp 41.5 V, βVoc −0.28%/°C, βVmp −0.34%/°C, Tmin −15 °C, hot cell 70 °C, 18 modules, inverter 1000 V maximum, MPPT minimum 200 V.
1. Correction = 1 + (−0.0028) × (−15 − 25) = 1.112.
2. Cold Voc = 49.5 × 1.112 = 55.04 V per module.
3. String = 18 × 55.04 = 990.8 V, a margin of 0.9% to 1000 V: it passes, but is marginal.
4. Nmax = floor(1000 / 55.04) = 18 modules.
5. Hot Vmp = 41.5 × (1 − 0.0034 × 45) = 35.15 V, so the string is 632.7 V against a 200 V minimum, and at least 6 modules are needed. The table method gives 1.10 and 980.1 V.
Safety & Installation Rules
  • Don’t size to STC Voc. The 891 V result hides an 11% rise at the coldest dawn.
  • Record-cold nights happen. This string exceeds 1000 V at about −19 °C, so use the extreme minimum.
  • Cloud-edge overshoot. Brief irradiance above 1000 W/m² on cold cells adds voltage and current.
  • Mixed orientations share one limit. Size every string on an input to that input.
  • Know your ceiling. A 600 V residential limit allows about 10 of these modules, a 1500 V utility inverter about 27.
